David Conte - Composer

David Conte is a Professor of Composition and Conductor of the Conservatory Chorus at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.  His close relationships with his teacher Nadia Boulanger and with her first American student of renown, Aaron Copland, informed and inform his striving as a creative artist committed to works that reflect the qualities of craftsmanship and harmonic sensibility Boulanger taught and Copland embodied.  He is the composer of over seventy published works, including five operas, a musical, works for chorus, solo voice, orchestra, chamber music, organ, piano, guitar, and harp.   In 2007 he received the Raymond Brock commission from the American Choral Director's Association, one of the highest honors bestowed upon a composer of choral music in America.   His choral music is in the repertories of choruses around the world.

Conte co-composed the film score for the award-winning documentary Ballets Russes (now available on DVD), and composed the music for the PBS documentary Orozco: Man of Fire.  His new work for Chanticleer, The Homecoming: In Memoriam Martin Luther King, Jr. has been performed around the world during the 2008-2009 concert season, and was featured on Majora Carter's NPR program "The Promised Land."  His choral work An Exhortation  on a text by Barack Obama was premiered at President Obama's inauguration in 2009.
